Integration of British Born Chinese into Politics

There are many British Born Chinese who have integrated into mainstream society- they are young professionals and high achievers. However, their attitude is that they do not need politics and politics does not need them. They do not feel the need or desire to get involved. This sort of thinking is wrong. We need to introduce these British Born Chinese to politics, which will give them status and power. We need to start now, this is the 3rd generation of British Born Chinese, if we don’t plant the seed now, we will lose out another generation.

Chinese have embraced the opportunities that life in Britain has afforded, and have reciprocated by giving back in equal measure financially. We do not feel however, that our place in Britain has been recognised by the British Government. Despite repeated attempts to engage public policy on issues such as immigration, consultation, communication, the Government has remained silent. We need to take action and send Chinese people into the forefront of politics to act as a representatives for Chinese people in Britain, so we have a voice and will no longer be ignored and unheard.

From Christine Lee in response to 2 recent events:

Dear British Chinese Participants

Thank you for joining us on this project. For those of you who attended the events on the 31st October and 1st November, I was extremely happy to see you all there. For those of you who couldn’t make it, do not worry, this is just the very start of the project. There are still a lot of decisions to be made- even the name! For those who were not at the launch meeting, one thing that we all agreed on was the change of the name of this project from the “Integration of British Born Chinese into Politics” into the “Integration of British Chinese into Politics”. This project really is all about you, so your opinions are what counts.

I was extremely happy during the meetings, because a lot of points were made- some were positive, and some negative. I have taken all your points into consideration, not just the positive things. I really think it is great, even the negative points which were raised, because it is getting everyone to think about politics and to voice their opinions and have a say, which is the core of what this project is about; it is about encouraging people like yourselves to take an interest in politics, and to stand up, and make your voices be heard.

As I have said time and time again, I am only here to open the door for you, it is up to you what you want to do in this project. We are still at the very early stages, and need your thoughts and views on how this project should proceed. It really is entirely up to you what you want from the project. We will be organising for everyone (all interested individuals, associations and representatives) to meet up and to eventually form a steering committee. I will be organising a time, date and location for our next meeting, and I will ask Jessica my PA to update you with the details as soon as it has been arranged.

I would also like to take this opportunity to inform you that along with Chairman of the All Party Chinese in Britain Parliamentary Group Mr Andrew Dismore MP, we have arranged for a Chinese New Year celebration party in the House of Commons. This will be taking place on 25th January, at 6pm in the Jubilee Room, Westminster Hall, in the main House of Commons building. Food and drinks will be sponsored by my firm. We have invited a lot of Ministers, MPs, and Lords & Ladies who are interested in our project. We know it is quite some time away, but this is just to let you all know so that you can keep the date free. We will be sending out email invitations shortly, so when you receive them, please let Jessica know whether you will be attending, because she will be sorting out the numbers.

Meanwhile, if you have any queries, or would like to share your opinions, please feel free to get in touch with Jessica: Jessica.tang@christine-lee.co.uk.

Thank you for your support,

Best Regards,

Christine Lee
